Honor God

The Bible talks a lot about honoring God. It is such a beautiful act. However, a  lot of what is going on in our society today is against this great act. We don’t honor God that much. We honor “me” first. We are so centered on self that God takes a backseat even in some Christian circles. There is even a movement that preaches man over God. It looks like it is about God but it is more about what God can do for us than what we can do for God. That is not the point. We were created to honor and worship God but we are moving away from what we were created for. God loves us. He adores us but it doesn’t mean we are more special than He is and we should be put on a pedestal. There are many influential people in the world that are put on a higher level than God. People who claim to love God but they love fame more. It is easy to thank God when you get an award. What happens when no one is looking matters more. I am learning how to honor God. I want to honor Him more and let Him be on top of everything. He should be my priority. He should increase and I should decrease. Honoring God implies dying to self. It means giving Him first place and being glad He is where He is in our lives. How can we honor God? When can we honor God? When we do everything we do to the glory of God, we honor God. When God gets the glory and the praise, we honor God. To honor is to regard with great respect. Holding God in high esteem is what we should be striving for.

We can scan our days and see where we honor God and where we should honor Him more. Praying to God and talking to Him first thing in the morning is a great way to honor Him. It shows that He matters to us and He comes first. Before we get out of bed, we can honor God. Before we have breakfast and before the shower we can honor God. When I pray in the morning, I welcome the Lord. I say “Good morning Lord. I welcome you here even though I know you are always here.” I acknowledge Him in my life. I don’t want to wait until Sunday. He is with me every minute of every day and He is so important to me. It is really a question of how much weight we give to our relationship with God. I think that is where we can see our level of respect for Him. There is nothing wrong with augmenting that level of respect by giving Him more of our time and energy. It is actually what we should be doing. Finding ways to communicate with God more throughout the day is key.

The Bible tells us that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit so taking care of our bodies, minds and souls is another way we can honor God. We can watch what we say, what we do and what we watch. I like to use the “Jesus filter” sometimes and I ask myself what Jesus would think. My spirit condemns me if I do something that is wrong. The Holy Spirit does not condemn me but my spirit does because it is renewed and it is influenced by the Spirit of God. When we are filled with the Spirit, our spirit knows right from wrong and it tries to get our attention. Repenting is a powerful habit. When we know we did something wrong because our spirit is reminding us, the next step is to repent. Repenting is showing God respect and honoring Him. God forgives our sins but if we never repent, we don’t see Him as the God who forgives us and we belittle Him.

Let’s honor God with praise and thanksgiving. That is a very crucial part of our honoring God. Showing Him reverence by lifting His name up is so important. Like I said, we were meant to praise the Lord. We should do it every day. With singing and dancing and with our words and our actions. Someone said that they didn’t have time to sing and dance for the Lord until the weekend. Waiting until the weekend is too late. The praising should go on all week. Add praise, with singing and dancing, to every day of the week and see what happens. The joy of the Lord will help you get through the week and you will be in compliance with God’s desire for your life. He desires that you honor Him because He knows it’s good for you. Speak about the Lord and speak as if everything you said was to honor the Lord. It is always to honor the Lord indeed. Do what you do for Jesus. Do your job for Jesus. Treat other people the way Jesus wants you to treat them. Honor God with your attitude toward life. Honor Him in your heart and in your mind. Direct your thoughts toward Him. Let Him be your number one. May God bless you and protect you and remember that He will always love you!
