Getting closer to God

I can only be as close to God as I decide to be. I believe this is true for everyone. It might sound like a simple truth but when you think about it it is the key to our relationship issues with God. God doesn’t step away from us. He doesn’t quit and doesn’t give up on us. He stands by and He remains the same. If we ever feel that He is not around it is because we haven’t been around Him. It is because we haven’t taken the time to be with Him. We have made choices that interfere with our relationship with Him. What are we prioritizing? What is leading us? What is dominating our lives? How do we spend our time? What are our daily goals? I think that the answers to these questions help shed light on how much room we have for God. The room I dedicate to God in my life grows and shrinks. Depending on the day of the week or the time of year, God’s room is either fully His or it is shared with “other priorities.” I am being very honest here and I have to say that I am working on changing how close I am to God every day. I don’t want to give Him the leftovers. I want Him to be my main attraction so to speak. He is on a pedestal or at least He should be.

I have all the excuses in the world like anyone else. Too much work, not enough time to work out and take care of my body. I am too tired. I am too busy. I need more socializing time. I have to take care of some people. We all have a list of “blockers” that prevent us from giving God more time. The goal is to block the blockers and create space for the Lord through daily injections of communion and one on one time with Him. Being close to God involves communicating with Him but it also implies communicating Him to others. I am not talking about preaching with words but letting our actions speak about Jesus. Renewing our minds so we are more inclined to live like Jesus and to stay closer to the Father. Making room for God makes room for all the wonderful things the Bible talks about. The most important one being having an intimate relationship with God. That connection can make the worst day seem like the best day of your life. When you are close to God, He shares His mind and your perspective is influenced by the assurance that everything is going to be fine. Once His mind is filling our minds, we can touch the world in ways that are powerful. We spend time with the Lord so we can share Him with the world. God is a giver and what we receive from Him we should give to others in return. The closer we get to God, the closer we will get to people. “Why” you may ask? Because He makes us love people more. He makes us want to help people more. He makes us want to lead people to salvation more.

How much should we give to God then? I don’t think there is a specific amount of time but I believe there should be a daily routine that involves spending time with Him. It’s not about quantity but about quality. We make room for those we love. God should be the first One to be let into that space. I am not here to tell you how to make room but I am here to encourage you to take the first steps toward making more space and time available for Jesus. Read about Him. Study His Word daily. “But I have so much work” you might be saying. Pray that you can carve up time in your busy schedule. God will make it happen. Like I said, take the first steps and He will lead you to Him. Get closer to God and He will draw closer to you. Sooner than later you will be walking in His footsteps, led by His Spirit and sharing His mind. My prayer is that you get as close to Jesus as possible and that you share Him with everyone you know!
